Time to Explore!

Trivia Question Time!

Hello, everyone! It's me, Maddy and I will occasionally give trivia questions. The one for this time is:

How many times does Pharell say "Get Lucky," in the song "Get Lucky"?

Is it:
A. 18
B. 32
C. 70
D. 86

Think you have the answer? Write your thought in a comment and I'll spill the beans next blog! Let's hope you " get lucky!"

Anyways, I have been having tons of fun in Highbourne. Right after dropping off Mom and Emmy at the airport, we took the dingy to a tiny little island. Seriously, it's small. You cannot fit a house on it! We call this island Lone Palm because it has one palm tree on it.
It takes up most of the island. I walked on the beach for a little bit and then took a swim. Lone Palm is full of shells because no one really goes on it. We jumped back on the dingy and went back home to go to bed. I was excited for the next day of adventure, and we would get to do so much!

Unfortunately, my wish did not come true. It rained hard all that night and part of the morning. When the furious rain came to an end, I went out on the deck. I thought everything had gone back to normal. Of course, I was wrong once again. There wasn't any rain, but the winds were very  hard and the waves were rough. Looks like we would have to spend what I thought would be the perfect day, inside. I decided that this would be a good day to start my work that I had to do. The front boat room turned into a classroom as I pulled out my textbooks and pencils.
I hoped that it would be easy. Finally, I  was in luck. Work was easy and soon I went out to the deck again. The wind was still thrashing trees' leaves around, but I really wanted to spend at least a little time outside. So, I asked Mamere and Grandpa if we could take a bike ride by renting island bikes.
It was super fun. We even drove by my new BFF, Mr. Skeleton! I told him that the bus was never going to come! Hopefully, he went home.

Then, we went home and jumped in bed. Hopefully, tomorrow was going to be beautiful. Who knew? My wish came true! It was sunny with a slight breeze and we went to a private beach.
Grandpa, Mamere, and I went to a little area with tide pools. Grandpa looked around and found a pretty much fossilized brain coral! It was so cool and don't worry, it was dead so we did not harm it. We only took pictures and put it back.

After a long day at the beach, we went back to the boat and had the best dinner yet. We had lamb chops, steak, mashed potatoes, and cabbage with cream of chicken soup. It was delicious! We dumped the leftovers overboard and big fish came and ate it.
I even saw a nurse shark check out the boat! By the way, I found out that some bull sharks were with the nurse sharks by the dock! After that we went to bed. This morning, we woke up just the same and after I finish this entry, we are going fishing! Well, I've gotta go catch a big one but stay tuned for next time. I'll give you our latest journeys and get ready for the answer to the trivia question! Let's hope we "get lucky" and catch a fish.

Living in Highbourne Cay

Hello, everyone! Once again, it's Maddy here in the beautiful Highbourne Cay. 6 days ago, we took off from the Land and Sea Park and rode another bumpy boat ride to another new island. It was Grandpa, Mamere, Mom, Emmy, and I at a nice little beach the first day.
The water here is bluer than the bluest and has a refreshing texture. We began to explore the island when we found a small little dock. We saw a sign that said " Beware of the Sharks ". I looked below the dock and saw right there, in the water, giant nurse sharks!

Nurse sharks can grow up to 14 feet and are non-aggressive. They also have no teeth. I guess the people who put the sign up didn't really know what they were talking about! Anyways, the next day was just the same, except I took close notice of the birds. Interesting fact #2: Half of the island of Highbourne Cay is a bird sanctuary. We saw lots of little black and white birds called bananaquits. We went to the beach again and saw a little general store. Grandpa and I walked in and saw the chips center. Prices over here are a bit different than back at my home in Florida, and America period. A small bag of chips is 1 dollar, but a "party size" bag is 10 dollars! We grabbed some ice cream instead. I got an ice cream sandwich. Every other day was about the same except we started taking walks on the docks at night. You can see the stars very well on the docks because the only lights are the small boat lights and the stars themselves.

After a cool night walk, we would usually get back to the Let it Go and go to sleep. I totally forgot about our meals! Every night was usually something different. Pork chops, steaks, fish, and lobster are usually common options. Yesterday was finally time for Mom and Emmy to fly back and leave me here. We woke up at about 8:00 in the morning and got ready. This airport was on tiny little island called Norman's Cay not too far from Highbourne. But how are they going to get there? We took them over on the dingy and wrapped their suitcase in trash bags so it wouldn't get wet.

When they were about to take off, I was a little sad because this was the first time Mom was leaving me for a long period of time. They took off and we walked back to the boat. I felt better immediately and I went on with my adventure. Can't wait for the next few weeks!
This guy has been waiting a long time for a bus!

Land and Sea Park Adventures

Quess what, everybody? Maddy here, and we just went to the Land and Sea Park. It's a cool island and the second one I've been to. We woke up early from Eluthera and got prepared for the boat ride over to the island. It was a 2 hour ride. My mom, grandparents,Emmy, and I went up to the top deck and started the ride. There wasn't much to this ride. Emmy and I slept the whole way! When we awoke, we saw an island that looked like it was floating right on the blue water. We radio called the park warden and he gave us a mooring ball so we could tie the boat on to it. When we got there, we tried to go snorkeling, but it was too cold and too much of a current. We took the dingy [ small fishing boat ] to a little beach. It was hot and the water got a little warmer just enough to be relaxing. Then, we saw a trail. We were walking on the trail when we saw a little lizard and he had a curled tail.
We had seen a lot of these and we called them Curly Tails.  Next, we got back to the dingy and went to another beach and went through another trail called " Pirate's Lair Trail".  Why is it called Pirate's Lair? I wondered. I soon got my answer! We went through and there was a flat area and a hole full of water and a sign that said Pirate's Lair.

I read through it and it said that long ago, this flat area was a pirate's lair. They camped out here because there was a natural well full of fresh water. I walked over and saw that it was full of fresh water! We went back and went to another beach with a giant whale skeleton! As most of you know, I love whales!!! There was a sign that read '52 ft. sperm whale died in the 1980's because of swallowing plastic. Please don"t pollute ' If you are reading this, DON'T POLLUTE! There is a picture of me with the skeleton below.

It started getting dark, so we headed to our boat,.Let it Go, to have dinner. My grandpa had caught fresh yellow-fin tuna. It was "tuna-tastic!"
Then, we saw the stars. With no lights on, I saw a shooting star! I got a star finder from my teacher, Mrs. Soderstrom, but decided to make it the next day. I miss everybody so much for example, my class, my teacher, and the family that I live with.

Well, I've gotta get back to letting it go, so talk to you next tide!

We are Finally Here!

Hey guys, Maddy here. I finally made it to the Bahamas! It all started yesterday in Fort Lauderdale. We made it to the Fort Lauderdale Airport at 10:00 in the morning. Our flight left at 12:30. The plane ride was very fun. It was a very short flight, too. Being only 50 minutes long, our plane landed in Nassau. This is the capital of Bahamas. I learned from the flight attendant that there are over 700 islands and cays in the Bahamas! We had lunch at the Nassau airport. Its not always chicken nuggets and hot dogs here. We went to Dunkin Donuts and had sandwiches. Then, as we waited for our last flight over to Rock Sound, Eleuthera, my sister Emmy and I colored pictures. Our flight left at 3:30. This was a small, propeller plane. Luckily, this flight was only 25 minutes long! You would think we could save money by driving there, but remember, these are islands. We would be driving underwater! Anyways, this plane was very hot. I was glad when we landed. This airport was very small. It was about as big as a community clubhouse. I learned how much simpler life was over here. No giant buildings here! My grandfather picked us up with his new friend, Jeremiah. He lived around here. Jeremiah drove us to the dock. Interesting fact: In the Bahamas, they drive on the left side of the road and the steering wheel is where the passenger seat should be. We made it to the dock and met my grandmother, Mamere. Emmy wanted to go on a pirate treasure hunt and we actually found treasure! It was sand dollars and necklaces. We walked down a sandy trail to a beach. The water is very clear and the sand feels like powder. We are finally here!
After an hour at the beach, it started getting dark. We walked home and I saw a little hermit crab. I named him Hermit. I also found a conch shell. I put Hermit in the conch and we walked home. I took a video of Hermit down below.
After taking a video of Hermit, I set him free and we had dinner. I was very tired, so we went to sleep fast. I have been through a lot so far, but my adventure has just begun.

Welcome to my blog

Hi everyone!! It's Maddy here, and I'm getting ready for my great Bahamas trip!  Here I am on my first boat many years ago.
This year, I will be able to go over to the Bahamas onto my grandparent's boat for 7 weeks! I am very insterested in marine biology and this is the perfect place to start. I am getting ready to pack up and fly over to the islands. Just yesterday, I got two pairs of brand new"boat" shoes that won't slip on the deck. I am so excited! I will be posting many of my sightings and findings and telling you all about them. I'm hoping to see a lionfish. Hopefully I will find one! Keep you posted!

Bon Voyage,
Maddy
